WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., September 10, 2024—Allegacy Federal Credit Union trained students from nine high schools in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools on September 6.
The Student-Run Credit Union program, now in its 17th year, begins each semester with an all-day training session where teenagers learn fundamental skills, including how to handle cash, adhere to compliance, uphold the elements of running a credit union, and help members make smart financial choices.
“What’s most impactful about the Student-Run Credit Union program is empowering students to seek financial independence while still in high school, learning about financial services and building healthy financial habits,” said Allegacy’s Community and Financial Wellbeing Manager, Lori Timm. “This program’s success is due in large part to the remarkable engagement of our local teachers who recognize the importance of financial education for students.”
In addition to the Student-Run Credit Union program, Allegacy offers financial workshops, digital tools like Enrich, and reality fairs to local high schools and universities. Students who are members of Allegacy are also eligible for its scholarship program which opens October 1, 2024. Students can apply for one of ten scholarships for both two and four-year programs.
